UNITE THE UNION; Cleaners at Manchester Airport Vote Overwhelmingly for Strike Action

Members of Unite, the UK's largest trade union, who work for Initial Air

Services based at Manchester Airport, have voted by 94.6% to 5.4% for industrial action over a 2% pay offer (see also Unite the Union).

The 200 Unite members, who are responsible for cleaning Manchester Airport, are angry that Initial Air Services have imposed a 2% pay offer previously rejected by workers. Unite says the company have refused further talks with the union to secure a reasonable negotiated settlement to the dispute and avoid industrial action.

Unite Organiser, Sharon Cowell said: "Following the collapse of talks with the company and their refusal to hold meaningful negotiations to resolve the dispute our members have no choice but to proceed with industrial action.

"These results are sending a clear message to the company that our members are willing to fight for a decent wage.

"Unite are calling on Initial to return to negotiations to try to settle the dispute over pay."

Unite will meet union workplace representatives later today (Thursday 26th June) to decide a programme of action unless the dispute over pay can be resolved.
