MARCH POISED FOR PRIVATE PLANES; Air Base: The Civilian Authority Likely Will Consider An Agreement May 21. The Air Force Also Must Agree.

March Air Reserve Base, the restricted nesting spot for F-16 fighter jets and other elite military aircraft, may soon open its runway to general aviation pilots, local officials have said.

Lori Stone, executive director of the civilian March Joint Powers Authority, said a tentative agreement has been struck with Air Force Reserve representatives to allow private planes - from small airplanes to charter jets - to land at the military airfield adjacent to Moreno Valley.

Details of the proposal, such as how security will be managed, have not been made public.

March authority representatives have been in discussions with the military to allow general aviation at the base for more than three years. Stone said the military would always have priority at March Field.

General aviation aircraft would require tower approval to land and would be turned away if they interfere with military operations, Stone said. It is unclear what types of noise impacts the small aircraft would have on neighborhoods surrounding the airfield.

Stone said she believes the novelty of private pilots being able to land on a military base will wear off for most.
